How many times have you seen the words “New Year, New You” this week?
Probably hundreds.
I suppose it’s meant to be motivating – to hint at the possibilities for change in the year ahead – but it always has the opposite effect for me: it hits a nerve.
The implication that as women we must need a complete overhaul every January is a bit insulting; don’t you think?
Like how can a middle-aged woman possibly feel good about herself the way she is?
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want a “New Me”.
As a women’s nutrition and fitness coach who works with women in midlife, I’ve heard it all: the good, the bad and the ugly about body image, health, weight struggles, lifestyle – you name it.
But despite all the laments and frustrations, I’ve found that once we get over the fact that we no longer fit into our jeans from 20 years ago – most of us are pretty happy with who we are!
So, what if instead of focusing on what we need to change about ourselves, we celebrate the fact that we’ve earned the right to feel good in our own skin at this stage of life?
And embrace the concept of just getting better.
As we turn the page on another year, let’s look for opportunities to make small changes to our health, our fitness, our nutrition, our lifestyle…
Instead of a complete overhaul (that we don’t even need!)
I coach my clients to adopt a mindset of getting a little bit better every day: no rigid timelines or unrealistic goals to create feelings of desperation or failure.
Just feeling your best. Looking your best. Performing your best.
At the age and stage you’re at right now.
Maybe it looks like…
- Losing a few pounds.
- Exercising more regularly
- Spending more time taking care of yourself
- Trying something new that pushes you outside your comfort zone
- Letting of relationships that no longer serve you
- Reducing your stress
- Being kinder to yourself
But none of these things require a whole new you.
Ask yourself what you can do every day to get a little bit better than the day before. The shift in energy, motivation, and consistency that takes place when you focus on improving rather than changing is transformative.
This year, create your goals and resolutions by considering what you can do to grow, to improve the life you already love, to feel good, be happier, less stressed, more fulfilled…
And let’s make 2025 a year of better 🥂,
